Founding Software Engineer

Founding Software Engineer

About Variable

We are building Variable, a software platform for manufacturing companies to measure the climate performance of their products using real-world data, at scale. This enables climate leaders to win more business and accelerates the growth of the zero carbon economy. We believe in science, the importance of using real-world data, the power of market forces and actually solving problems instead of ticking compliance boxes. We’ve been growing fast and our users are some of the best product designers and environmental engineers in the Nordics and beyond, and we recently signed our first Fortune200 customer.

We’re looking for a founding engineer to join our team. We are in a rapidly growing market so we need to build a system that is reliable, resilient, scientifically accurate, and can also adapt to evolving market needs. It’s a fun challenge, and if you enjoy the startup environment and creating something new in a complex domain, then we think you’ll have a lot of fun working with us.

We have a small, experienced team with a background of building and running successful companies and an investor base with a long-term perspective. We want to stay small and focused and build an awesome company together.

Must haves

You are:

  • Self-motivated and truly love building software.

  • Passionate about solving the climate crisis. That’s the reason we’re doing this.

  • Experienced- you’ve been building software for a while and have worked in a few different products/projects.

  • Determined and resilient- things don’t always go as smoothly as you’d like them to, but you get the job done.

  • Pragmatic and have good judgement. Sometimes the problem is worth obsessing about a bit more, sometimes it makes sense to just get something valuable onto prod and move on, and sometimes you just have to fix the urgent bug any way you can, as fast as you can.

  • A great team player. You do your absolute best with every task, and expect the rest of the team to do the same, but also know that we succeed or fail together as a team.

  • Product oriented. You can empathize with our users. You enjoy the complexity of the domain and also enjoy finding ways to make that easier for our users to understand it and get it right.

  • Aesthetically aware. You appreciate good UX and UI. You don’t need to be able to design things from scratch, but you can produce good results when you have a design system to reference.

  • Willing to live in Oslo. At this stage, we want to work with everyone here in person.

Nice to have

We have a React web app, a Node.js (Typescript) API, and the database is Neo4j. All hosted in GCP (using Terraform to manage infrastructure). We use several LLM APIs. It’s great if you have experience with any or all of those technologies. But if you don’t, and you’re motivated to learn, that’s totally ok.

Daily life

You’ll be working a lot with me, Jimmy, the co-founder and CTO. I’m originally from the US and worked in the SF Bay Area for 18 years before moving to Oslo in 2018. Life in Oslo is great. If you’re not already here, I’m happy to tell you about it.

We figure out what to build together with the rest of the team (product & growth). We regularly sit with customers to understand their perspectives and the problems they need to solve. Everyone on the engineering team is full-stack, so we all write code for the frontend and backend and handle infrastructure changes.

What we offer

  • Competitive startup salary + equity (1.5 - 2.5%)

  • 5 weeks of vacation + national holidays

  • Flexible office rules. We have a cool office in a great location (downtown Oslo), and we all like working there, but we also appreciate focus days at home.
